IMPORTANCE OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Have you ever thought of occupational therapy? How it helps? What is the importance of it? For all these questions answer isn't simple. But one thing is sure..it makes life much simpler for those who is bound to use.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY gives support and balance for the child, and improves the posture. Here, I write my experience with my child using occupational therapy. Attaining right sitting posture while feeding is very important for kids. Especially kids with muscle tone issues is more prone to choking hazard due to involuntary moments and loss of balance.

Feeding Chair:
My son has stiffness for all limbs. Has difficulty in feeding and chewing. No control of tongue movement while chewing, especially it was too tough when he fed more quantity in his mouth than the usual amount. Could not sip water using cup and sipper. For all these issues his occupational therapy gave bit sigh of relief by providing the right support for him. He has been recommended to use feeding chair which improved his sitting posture while eating and drinking. And also it has encouraged him to feed himself.

Bath Seat:
Bathing has become biggest challenge for me when he crossed 18+ months. Bath tub which I had used was too big when he was 18 months old . My son was referred to use bath seat by occupational team. To be honest I had no idea that there are various models according to child needs. I had to change couple of bath seats for my son. Initially nothing worked for him due to extreme stiffness of his upper limbs. Finally got something useful, which prevents him from falling while bathing. Not only that it made him independent, he can play while bathing.

Standing Frame:

It is very important to use standing frame. Standing frames not only makes a child psychologically confident and independent it also gives numerous physical health benefits.

Physical health benefits are

  •  To get weight bearing, for healthy bones
  •  To prevent muscles from getting tight by stretching leg muscles.
  •  To improve the child confidence levels.
  •  Improved functionality of internal organs and system. Examples are improves circulation, improves digestion, bowel and bladder function, respiratory system.
